The devil is in The Details:
A couple of weeks back, I had a conversation with somebody that was upset about how we do something here at the church, and it got me thinking: why do we let small things in the church divide us? I want you to think of a time where you disagreed with something the church did.
Now, I am not talking about something major like speaking blasphemy or false teaching; those are always wrong, and we should disagree fully! I am talking about something small; maybe it was a song you didn't like, or the volume of music being too loud, or the type of toilet paper we use in the bathroom. Now that you have your thing in mind, I want you to ask yourself: in the grand scheme of things, is it really that big of a deal? My guess would be the answer is no... But small things like that can cause division in the church and even cause people to leave.
Imagine, one day your spouse comes home, and their hair is dyed bright pink, and you hate it... Would you leave them because of it? No, that would be crazy! Your love for them is so much deeper than that. So, why is it different when it comes to church? Let me tell you why: it is because the devil is in the details. He wants us to be so focused on the small things that we lose sight of what truly matters. And that division keeps us from being effective in fulfilling what God has asked us to do, and that is to go into all nations, making disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. But we can't do that if we are a church divided. And that isn't just the case with our church. Sadly, the Church as a whole has become too focused on the details. We have divided over denominational differences; we are constantly in competition as to which church has the better pastor or which church has higher attendance, it has given us an “us vs them” mentality and has taken our focus off Jesus... That is exactly what the devil wants, because he knows that a house divided cannot stand.
So, my challenge to you is this: keep the main thing the main thing, Jesus! Don't get caught
up in the details.
