I have always struggled with stewardship of what God has given me with regards to the
affordability of my life choices. My parents are my inspiration as to how to be a good steward of God’s resources and this article is based on what my Mom and Dad modeled to me as Christian parents. I have realized contentment and affordability for my life within the resources God always provides. The question of whether Christians face an affordability problem (as described by some news outlets) or a spending problem (the reality of poor choices) touches on both practical and spiritual aspects of financial stewardship. As followers of Christ, how we manage resources wisely is an important part of living out biblical values.
Affordability refers to the ability to pay for necessary expenses and maintain a reasonable standard of living. Many Christians, like others, may struggle with rising costs of housing, healthcare, education, and basic needs. Economic factors—such as inflation, stagnant wages, or unexpected expenses—can make it difficult for some to afford what they need, regardless of how carefully they manage their money.
Examining spending habits is necessary when a spending problem arises - when individuals make financial choices that do not align with their income or priorities. This can include unnecessary purchases, excessive debt, or failing to budget effectively. For Christians, stewardship is a key principle: the Bible encourages believers to manage their resources responsibly, avoid greed, and prioritize generosity and helping others.
So, what are the “Biblical Principles of Stewardship”.
• Contentment: The apostle Paul wrote, "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances"
(Philippians 4:11). Contentment helps guard against overspending and the constant pursuit of more.
• Generosity: Christians are called to give generously, trusting God to provide for their needs.
(2Corinthians 9:6-8)
• Planning: Proverbs 21:5 says, "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” Wise planning and budgeting are important for financial health.
• Avoiding Debt: Proverbs 22:7 warns that "the borrower is slave to the lender," highlighting the dangers of excessive debt.
For some Christians, affordability is a genuine challenge due to external factors beyond their control. For others, spending habits and choices may be the root of financial struggles. Often, the reality is a combination of both: economic pressures can make wise financial management even more critical, while poor spending habits can exacerbate affordability issues.
Here are some practical steps to help keep a healthy stewardship of what God has blessed every Christian.
1. Assess Needs vs. Wants: Regularly review your expenses and differentiate between necessities and luxuries.
2. Create a Budget: Develop a realistic budget that aligns with your income and priorities.
3. Practice Generosity: Make giving beyond your tithes part of your financial plan, trusting in God’s provision.
4. Seek Wise Counsel: Consider financial advice from trusted sources, including Christian financial ministries.
5. Pray for Wisdom: Ask God for guidance in managing resources faithfully.
In conclusion, the question of affordability versus spending is complex and varies by individual circumstance. As Christians, the call is to be faithful stewards of all that God provides—whether facing financial limitations or the temptation to overspend. By applying biblical principles and practical wisdom, believers can strive to honor God with their finances and
support those in need.
May God Richly Bless you and yours with all necessary resources and wisdom in 2026.
